Angela was inspired into acting after seeing James Earl Jones in a production of Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men while on a high school trip. Being a good student, Angela received a scholarship to Yale and earned a B.A. in African-American studies before going on to receive a Master of Fine Arts Degree from the Yale School of Drama in 1983. Later Angela would also receive an honorary degree from Howard University.
Like many actors Angela started her career on stage but quickly moved to TV roles and parts in movies. Her first feature film role was in F/X. Through the 80's Angela worked a mixture of stage, TV and small movie parts. It wasn't until her role in Boyz n the Hood
